전시 서문 / 도면

우리는 눈앞에 펼쳐진 실재(Reality)를 어떻게 인지하며 살아가는가? 우리가 당연하게 여기는 현실과 그로부터 파생된 이미지 사이의 경계에 질문을 던져 봅니다. 흔히 실재를 단단하고 견고한 ‘실체’로, 디지털 이미지를 가볍고 얇은 ‘허상’으로 구분하곤 합니다. 그러나 이분법적으로 나누었던 두 세계는 사실 ‘중첩과 간섭’이라는 동일한 속성을 공유한다고 생각합니다.

〈수면을 그리는〉 작업은 디지털 화면 위에서 우연히 발견한 무아레(moiré) 현상으로부터 시작됩니다. 바다 건너 엄마와의 화상 통화 중, 거실 벽지의 미세 질감과 제 휴대폰 화면의 픽셀이 중첩되며 무아레 무늬가 발생했습니다. 곁에 마주 앉아 대화하는 것 같았던 엄마는 사실 픽셀화된 데이터였고, 무아레 물결은 '가까움'을 가장한 '멀리 있음'의 역설적인 감각을 일깨웠습니다. 저와 엄마 사이를 가로막고 있는 태평양이라는 거대한 수면처럼, 이 디지털 무아레는 물리적 거리를 상기시키는 동시에 벽면처럼 우리 사이의 경계가 되었습니다. 그를 둘러싼 배경이자 주변부에서 발생한 이 기묘한 일렁임은 단순한 알고리즘적 오역이 아니라, 물리적 거리와 단절, 그럼에도 불구하고 존재하는 연결을 보여주는 유동적인 상(image)입니다.

이 감각은 물리적 세계의 파동으로 확장됩니다. 〈Liquid Glass〉는 유리잔의 세로선들이 중첩되며 만들어내는 물리적 무아레를 통해 실재의 이면을 드러냅니다. 닿을 수 없는 거리에서 관찰되는 이 일렁임은, 우리가 마주하는 풍경이 견고하고 꽉 찬 매스(mass)가 아니라 무수한 원자들이 발산하는 파동이 부단히 서로를 간섭하며 빚어낸 거대한 이미지이자 환영임을 환기시킵니다. 텅 빈 원자들로 이루어진 이 세계는 고정된 실체가 아니라, 순간순간 중첩되어 만들어진 결과물의 한 단면일 뿐입니다.

결국 이 전시를 통해 디지털 이미지의 허상성과 실재의 환영이 다르지 않다는 역설을 이야기하고자 합니다. 관객들이 익숙하지만 낯선 겹쳐진 면들을 경험하길 바랍니다. 우리가 보고 만지고 있는 모든 것은 사실 끊임없이 흔들리고 변하는 파동의 상(像)입니다. 눈앞에 있으나 온전히 움켜쥘 수 없는, 그 아득하고 유동하는 감각을 잠시나마 포착하려는 시도입니다.

How do we perceive the reality unfolding before our eyes? I question the boundaries between the reality we take for granted and the images derived from it. Often, we categorize reality as a solid, tangible entity, while viewing digital images as light, thin illusions. However, I believe these two worlds, seemingly binary, actually share the same fundamental properties: superimposition and interference.

My work, Drawing the Water’s Surface, began with a serendipity with a moiré pattern on a digital screen. During a video call with my mother across the ocean, the fine texture of her wallpaper overlapped with the pixels of my phone screen, creating a moiré effect. My mother, who felt as if she were sitting right across from me, was actually pixelated data. This rippling moiré awakened a paradoxical sense of 'distance disguised as closeness.' Like the vast Pacific Ocean lying between us, this digital moiré served as both a reminder of our physical distance and a boundary—a wall—between us. This strange shimmering in the background is not a mere algorithmic error; it is a fluid image that reveals physical distance, disconnection, and yet, an ongoing connection.

This sensation extends to the waves of the physical world. Liquid Glass reveals the hidden side of reality through physical moiré created by the overlapping vertical lines of glass cups. This shimmering, observed from an unreachable distance, reminds us that the landscapes we face are not solid, filled masses. Instead, they are vast images—illusions—sculpted by the constant interference of waves emitted by countless atoms. This world, composed of empty atoms, is not a fixed entity but merely a result created by moment-to-moment superimposition.

Ultimately, through this exhibition, I want to explore the paradox that the illusory nature of digital images and the 'illusion' of reality are no different. I hope viewers experience these familiar yet strange overlapping planes. Everything we see and touch is, in fact, an image of waves that constantly fluctuate and change. This is an attempt to briefly capture that distant, fluid sensation—something that is right before our eyes but can never be fully grasped.
